The latest Formula One circuit is the Miami International Autodrome, a temporary track but designed to have a permanent feel. After considering 36 track layouts, UK firm Apex Circuit Design chose the final design for the 5.4km (3.3 mile) 19-turn anticlockwise circuit within the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took victory this month at the circuit’s inaugural F1 race, thrilling onlookers as he negotiated the circuit with its three high-speed straights where cars nudge 320kph – 200mph. Track elevation changes and tight chicanes added to the day’s excitement.

A good track design is essential for ensuring an exciting race and the choice of a track surface for optimal tyre grip is part of that design work. Gardner Asphalt, working alongside General Asphalt and Rifenberg Construction, were among the cast of thousands that helped bring a spectacular weekend of F1 racing to fans.

Gardner supplied specially formulated NTQS1 Trackless Tack for the asphalt pavement construction. In all, 21,772 tonnes (24,000 tons) of asphalt were paved over 77,724m (85,000 yards) in echelon.

Gardner Asphalt says that its NTQS1 Trackless Tack is the most innovative non-ionic chemical asphalt emulsion used for application where a tenacious tack coat is required. NTQS1 provides superior bonding properties, prevents slippage of layers and reduces tracking while being highly stable. It becomes a monolithic layer with the substrate but can also be used as a prime coat where permitted.

Gardner Asphalt Supply recommends that NTQS1 is applied when hot, around 55°C to 71°C (130°F to 160°F). Prior to application, all surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned – especially milled surfaces. If the product is to be stored for an extended period of time, the material should be agitated and/or gently circulated prior to use.

Florida-based Gardner Asphalt Supply offers a wide range of paving grades asphalts, cutbacks, asphalt emulsions, warm mix, ground tyre rubber and polymer modified asphalts. Its parent company, Gardner-Gibson, says that it has developed more patents than any competitor in the industry. The company says that it continues to advance water-based technology, reducing and in some cases eliminating solvents and VOCs, volatile organic compounds) thereby allowing customers to work with safer products.

General Asphalt, a provider of airport runway construction and one of the largest heavy highway and civil contractors in southern Florida. Its work often also includes milling, earthwork, lighting, sandblasting, concrete, thermoplastic and striping.

Rifenburg Construction, based in New York state, specialises in earthmoving and restoration, including landfill expansions and closures, site work, highway and bridge expansion projects and utility installations.
