Lane Construction has been awarded a US$223 million contract to rebuild a major interstate interchange in Florida. The work is intended to boost capacity and will also help improve safety for the interchange between I-274 and I-4 in Tampa.
The project will be carried out under a design-and-build contract Lane Construction is the US subsidiary of Italian firm Webuild, which is carrying out a number of other projects in the US at present. The work is needed as the interchange handles around 200,000 vehicles/day, which is more than it was designed for originally. As a result, congestion is a common problem and especially at peak periods.
Commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation, the contract will help the I-275/I-4 act as a main hurricane evacuation route for the greater Tampa Bay area. The work includes widening, changing and realigning ramps, updating signage and erecting noise barriers. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.
Lane is already working on an adjacent contract to improve safety and traffic flow along the I-275 Corridor. Both projects will help increase mobility and safety for drivers in the Tampa Bay area.
