A stretch of the A-59 Autobahn in Germany is to be widened in a project worth €450 million. The work will see a 2km stretch of the route being widened so that it features six lanes. Construction work will commence in early 2026 and will be completed in the third quarter of 2029.
The interchange where the A-59 meets the A-40 will also be upgraded to provide more capacity and boost safety for drivers. The work includes replacing the A-59 bridge spanning the Ruhr River. Called the Berlin Bridge, the structure is in poor condition and is no longer able to meet traffic demand. The structure also crosses several roads, a highway section, several railway lines, the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Duisburg port basin. The A-59 has been closed to heavy truck traffic due to the poor condition of the Berlin Bridge.
The joint venture project will be headed by Hochtief, which was awarded a €145 million share of the contract by Autobahn GmbH. According to HOCHTIEF, the new Duisburg interchange will deliver a completely new traffic route consisting of additional overpasses and connections between the two highways.
