A study is now being carried out for the proposed tunnel and bridge link to connect Sweden and Finland. Running between the Swedish capital, Stockholm, and the Finnish city of Turku, the alignment for the bridge and tunnel connection would link Swedish and Finnish islands, including the island of Åland.
With an estimated cost anywhere from €10-20 billion, the project is controversial both on grounds of cost and environmental concerns. There are areas of environmental interest on or close to the intended route that would have to be protected from any construction activity. The study for the project has support from the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK).
Should the project go ahead, it would replace the ferry service between Stockholm and Turku. This would shorten journey times for drivers considerably.
