A major road rebuilding plan will help boost transport for Estonia’s capital city, Talinn. The work will be carried out in the 2024-2027 once approval has been given by the Tallinn City Council.
Three new tram lines will be installed. Existing intersections will be improved to boost traffic flow as well as safety and road maintenance works will be part of the package. Road sections will also benefit from upgrades such as resurfacing and new drainage as well as the installation of the latest traffic control technology.
Provision for vulnerable road users will be improved. This will include the construction of new cycle lanes, forming part of a programme intended to boost active travel and sustainability in Talinn.
However, the Estonian government is facing difficulties in sourcing the additional €100 million it needs to spend on road building works during 2024. The shortage of funds could affect construction employment levels. At present The Estonian Government has a budget of €150 million available for road works in 2024 but this is not sufficient for all of the works required.
