India’s capital Delhi looks set to benefit from a massive road transport upgrade programme. The work will help tackle the city’s notoriously heavy traffic congestion.
The authorities in the city have plans that include work for around 150km of roads, of which around 46km would be either overpasses or underpasses. The work would be carried out in key areas of the city that currently suffer amongst the worst traffic congestion. Included in the plans would be a 20km corridor linking the NH-48 with Phirni Road. A 19km elevated road is also proposed, which would be built in three stages.
One transport project involves the construction of a double-deck flyover as part of the metro expansion programme. This work includes a deck for the metro system as well as another deck for road transport. Other parts of the metro system will also feature double-deck flyovers that include both a level for the metro and another for road transport.
The budget for the work to the city’s transport system has yet to be revealed.
