Major road development works are being planned in Costa Rica. There are discussions being held over the potential extension for Route 27 between transport infrastructure firm Globalvia and the Ministry of Public Works. Carrying out the extension work is expected to cost US$600 million but there is a shortage of the necessary funding within the Ministry of Public Works. Globalvia manages Route 27 at present and has a strong focus on the road’s green credentials.

Meanwhile, the $416 million proposal to upgrade the road connecting capital San Jose with Cartago is facing a difficult challenge. The contractor MECO put forward the proposal but this has been rejected by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. MECO is challenging the decision, which would have required the Costa Rica Government to contribute $86 million to the upgrade work. The San Jose to Cartago route is one of the busiest roads in Costa Rica and widening the link would boost capacity and cut congestion.
