Construction work for Copenhagen’s new road tunnel link, the Nordhavn Tunnel, is delayed. The tunnel was originally planned to be open for traffic in 2027 but the link will not be ready until 2028.
The project is being carried out in a joint venture between MT Højgaard Danmark and NV BESIX and the client is the Danish Road Directorate. The BESIX-MTH JV recently held discussions with the Danish Road Directorate, Vejdirektoratet, over the delays and extra work required for the project and agreed a new schedule.
The alignment of the tunnel runs under Svanemøllehavnen and Kalkbrænderiløpet in Østerbro in Copenhagen and the link will be an extension of the Nordhavnsvej tunnel on to Nordhavn.
The 1.4km tunnel will start at Nordhavnsvej/east side of Strandvænget and end at Kattegatvej in Nordhavn. The link will provide more direct access to Nordhavn. The project will also move much of the heavy traffic from the rest of the road network in Østerbro. The tunnel will feature twin tubes and have two lanes in either direction and is expected to carry around 8,200 vehicles/day. The tunnel is being built using a novel cut and cover process requiring groundwater lowering. When work started the project was expected to cost around $348 million but the delays and changes to the work mean that the final costs will be higher.
