Further progress is being made with the project to build the 17.2km sea crossing in Mumbai. India. The contract to build the structure has been awarded to Reliance Infrastructure. Measuring 17.2km long, the new bridge will connect Versova with Bandra and its construction is expected to take around 60 months. The aim of the project is to reduce the chronic congestion that afflicts Mumbai, particularly at peak periods. This will cut journey times from 90 minutes at present to just 10 minutes once the link opens to traffic. Building the sea crossing is expected to cost US$946 million. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is overseeing the project and will announce the location of the yard where the bridge components will be cast in due course.
