The contract for the first section of the new ring road for the city of Chennai in India has now been awarded. The US$282.6 million package of works will be handled by Indian firm Tata Projects.
The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Project (Northern Port Access Road) will be 25.4km in length and will feature three lanes in either direction. One of the major civil structures to be constructed will be a 1.4km bridge spanning the Buckingham Canal.
The ring road route will feature a total of eight major bridges and eight minor bridges. A number of overpasses and underpasses as well as two bridges crossing the route and a major interchange will be included in the work. The project will improve transport in one of the country’s major cities and is of key significance for India.
Other works include the construction of nearly 42km of retaining walls and 29.4km of drainage to prevent flooding.
