Construction work has started has started in Chad for the 381km highway linking Abéché with Amdjarass and running via Amzoer, Guéréda and Iriba. The $635 million contract is being carried out by Egyptian firm The Arab Contractors and is expected to take up to three years to complete. The work has been split into four stages, with the project forming part of a wider, five-year programme by the Chad Government intended to boost the network by 7,000km by 2029.
The new Abéché to Amdjarass highway will help to improve transport with neighbouring Libya and Sudan as well as Egypt to the north. It will speed transport to the Libyan ports of Benghazi and Misrata on the Mediterranean and the Egyptian port of Safaga on the Red Sea, a key issue for landlocked Chad.
