Cameroon has benefited from a major expansion and upgrade of its road network between 2016 and 2023. Over 2,075km of new roads have been completed in the period according to the Ministry of Public Works (MINTP).

At the end of 2023, the country had over 10,225km of surfaced roads and nearly 5,800km of National Roads as well as 109km of motorways. Key road links completed include a 63km route linking Bamenda, Batibo and Numba, the 52.5km route connecting Numba, Bachuo and Akagbe and the 38.5km route between Edéa and Kribi.

Meanwhile, work started recently on the second phase of the tolled highway linking Cameroon’s largest city, the port of Douala, with the capital Yaounde. The route was originally intended to be 136km in length but will now measure 141km when complete. Work on the first phase of the project commenced in 2014. The China First Highway Engineering Corporation won the award for the second stage from Cameroon’s MINTP following a tender process in 2020.

Road and highway construction projects for West Africa and Central Africa are opening up trade and transport between nations. New roads will link Cameroon with Gabon to the south as well as Nigeria to the west. A new coastal highway for southern Nigeria and the new coastal highway between Nigerian and Ivory Coast will permit through traffic all the way from Gabon and Ivory Coast.
