Cameroon needs to upgrade its road network, particularly with regard to surfacing much of the system. The country’s Ministry of Public Works has pointed out that less than 6% of the road network is surfaced at present. As a result of the poor transport connections, the country’s economy has suffered from slow progress.
In all Cameroon’s road network extends 121,501.5km, according to the latest official figures provided by the Ministry of Public Works. However, a mere 7,252.8km of the country’s roads are surfaced. That figure equates to only 5.9% of the system.
Of the paved roads 4,570km are national roads, while ,1562km are municipal roads and 1,042km are regional roads. A mere 78.5km are highways and this includes a 40km stretch of the main highway connecting the country’s two main cities,Doula and Yaounde.
The highway between Doula and Yaounde is still under construction, as is the highway between Kribi and Lolable.
