Berlin’s €1.84 billion bridge repair plan

The authorities in Germany’s capital Berlin are planning an extensive series of bridge repair and replacement works. The plan calls for 175 of the city’s bridges to be replaced and a further 125 to be repaired within a 15-year timescale.

With a projected pricetag of €1.84 billion, Berlin’s bridge repair and replacement plan will require additional Federal and EU funding, although the city is able to contribute to some of the costs.

Berlin has 1,047 bridges in total, carrying motor vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. However, just 19% of these are rated as in good or very good condition.
