Slovakia’s National Motorway Company, NDS, has opened a tender for construction of the next stage of the Košice Bypass project.
The 6.8km stage will run from Haniska to the city of Šaca and likely will cost around €162.5 million, including five new bridges.
Parts of the bypass are open, giving motorists a continuous connection from the I-16 road in the direction of Šace to sections of the D1 motorway and the R4 expressway around Košice. The NDS said around 3,000 trucks will eventually pass through this next section daily.
The government is also considering upgrades to the I-16 that would take in widening and improved shoulders.
Košice is Slovakia’s second-largest city with over 240,000 residents.
