A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for another part of Provincial Highway 61 Western Coastal Expressway Intersection Improvement Project in Taiwan.
The part for which construction will start is the rural Miaoli County Section 5 at Shoutian Temple in Dashan, Houlong Township, according to a report in Chinatimes.com.
Project finish is expected by January 2029 at a cost of around US$116.1 million. Completion should improve the long-standing congestion and traffic safety issues on the Miaoli section of Provincial Highway 61 Western Coastal Expressway.
The project is being undertaken by the Northern Region Road Construction Branch of the Directorate General of Highways within Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
When complete, the Western Coastal Expressway will run around 308.4km, from the Tanshui District of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan to the Annan District of Tainan in southern Taiwan. Major cities along the route heading from north to south are New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan. Several sections of the highway are motorway while the rest are at local highway standards. Several sections are open for traffic while others, such as the Miaoli Section 5 at Shoutian Temple in Dashan are still under construction.
