The Yorkshire and Humberside network includes 1,650km of motorway

UK highways maintenance specialist Amey has been awarded a €201 million Area 12 Maintenance and Response contract by Highways England.

The eight-year contract starts in June next year and will see Amey be responsible for the network covering Yorkshire and Humberside counties, providing all routine and cyclic maintenance on the trunk roads and motorway network.

The network spans 1,650km of motorway, 476km of four-lane main roads, 179km of single-lane major roads, as well as 1,963 road structures.

Responsibilities include incident management, defect rectification and responding to severe weather. Amey will also will also oversee traffic management during incidents and the operation of the 10 maintenance depots in the region. Effective road maintenance is also a factor in sustainability.

Peter Anderson, managing director of transport infrastructure at Amey, said the company already has similar contracts – Area 7 and Area 10 – as well as a North East Regional Technology Maintenance contract.

Amey will ensure that 85% of new employees to the contract will be from Yorkshire and Humberside, as well as ensuing that 5% of its workforce are apprentices or graduates.

The Yorkshire announcement comes as Amey goes live with the Avonmouth and Severn Bridges, Specialist Bridge Inspection and Maintenance contact, secured last August. The bridge spans the Severn Estuary from Somerset county in western England to southeast Wales.
