Two major transport infrastructure projects are getting the go ahead in Nigeria following official approval. The $322 million budget has been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Discussions with banks are underway regarding funding.
One of the projects is for the upgrade of the important Kano-Katsina highway in the north of the country, while the other is for the new Carter Bridge in Lagos in the south-west. Building the Carter Bridge is expected to cost $234 million and the project is intended to help reduce congestion in a city known as one of the worst in the world for traffic delays.
Construction of the 152km Kano-Katsina highway has been split into three sections. The 74km section one will now cost an estimated $44.4 million, a considerable increase from the $15.7 million previously anticipated. The 79.5km section two will now cost $43.15 million, also increased from the $30 million expected.
