A loan from the World Bank (WB) will help fund repair work to a key road link in Bolivia. The US$225 million loan will be used to improve roads in Bolivia, with the most important project being for the repair and upgrade of the link connecting Trinidad with Santa Cruz. The funds will help pay for improvements to a 567km stretch of this road, which will be resurfaced and improved. The work is expected to cost around $215 million to complete

In Australia plans are in hand with regard to constructing an asphalt-surfaced road connecting Adelaide in South Australia with Brisbane in Queensland. The state authorities in South Australia are working with Infrastructure Australia on a plan to construct an asphalt surface for the 426km section between Innamincka and Lyndhurst in South Australia. This section of the work is likely to cost in the order of US$317.3 million. Funding sources for the project are being considered at present although the work c

US firm Carlson is best known for its screeds, which are used by a wide range of paver manufacturers in the US. However Carlson, part of the Astec Group, is also a manufacturer of asphalt pavers. The firm recently broadened its line up with the addition of another compact paver model, the CP75. This new model shares a number of features with the existing CP100 from Carlson.

Atlas Copco Dynapac has upgraded its US style F800T paver. This highway class machine is aimed at the 3.05m wide market. Power comes from a six-cylinder Cummins diesel that meets the Tier 4 Final emissions requirements. The machine has a 34kW onboard generator which is sufficient to power the electrically heated screed, as well as extra lighting for night working and other equipment.

A new automated levelling tool from MOBA is available that can help improve paving quality. The system is designed to deliver a smooth and even asphalt surface, by ensuring that the height and slope of the screed on the paver is accurately maintained. This is particularly important when the machine is moving in the vertical plane due to uneven ground or sub base conditions. Achieving smoothness is important to the paving contractor. Atlas Copco is now introducing its Dynapac Remixer, which is designed to deliver a high quality, homogeneous asphalt mix The unit has been designed to fit inside the hopper of a paver and can help boost mat quality. Research shows that thermal and mechanical segregation of the asphalt mix can trigger problems in the mat including unevenness and irregular surfaces, a larger void content and reduced compaction. These issues can cause long-term problems and will shorten the service life of the paved surf
