The proposed A-5 highway improvement project for Madrid would see the new route running underground. This would provide the Spanish capital with the opportunity to redevelop a green space in the south of the city.
Running the busy road stretch underground would also deliver benefits in terms of reducing pollution and noise, while reducing surface traffic. In addition, the move would help with boosting space for public transit and sustainable mobility modes as well.
Further details on the possible cost of the project have yet to be revealed however. The exact route, portal locations, length and diameter of the proposed tunnel have also to be revealed.
