Construction work will start soon on an important highway projectin New South Wales, Australia. Funding worth US$381 million (A$560 million) is being provided for the project by the Australian Government, while the New South Wales Government is supplying $95.2 million (A$140 million).
The tender process has attracted strong interest from major contractors; Acciona Constructions Australia, Fulton Hogan Construction and John Holland. The New England Highway bypass will be Singleton’s biggest infrastructure project and is expected to improve the movement of freight and journeys for current and future traffic demands according to the Transport for NSW website.
Construction work on the project is scheduled to start in mid-2023, weather permitting, and the bypass is expected to open to traffic in late 2026. The 8km bypass will remove one of the Hunter region’s worst areas for traffic congestion. The project will include new interchanges as well as a 600m bridge. The new link will be built so as to allow it to be widened to a dual carriageway in the future if required.
